It would be easy to argue that the faces are the heart and soul of the classic Thomas & friends series. Without them, the characters we know and love would simply be regular locomotives, devoid of the human characteristics that make them relatable to us. Despite the reputation they have gained for being "static" and "creepy", the faces are what gave the characters life and were an extremely important aspect of the show for over 20 years. How the faces were made The faces were originally sculpted in clay atop clear Perspex panels with eye shaped half spheres attached to them to act as the character's eyeballs. This was so the eye holes would match up to the eyes on the prop. Each character had a different plate with their own correct eye spacing on which their faces were sculpted. Duke the found engine: Restoring his Grace!

As most of you reading this are probably already aware, we've had the honor and privilege to acquire the Duke the Lost Engine prop used in the fourth (and technically fifth) season of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends. To us, this is a very special model having only appeared in 4 episode of season 4 (Our personal favorite season) and one episode of season 5 masquerading as Bertram, a simple repaint of Duke using Smudger's face. That means it never appeared outside the classic era of the show and a larger narrow gauge scale model of Duke was never made. He seems a product of his time, and most fans associate Duke with the best era of the show. He was never tainted by the mediocrity of the later model era or modernized with the advent of CGI. He remains a time capsule of sorts, taking us and many other fans back to the golden era of Thomas, a time that many of us hold very close. Season 4 Narrow Gauge Explained After public outcry from The Reverend Awdry himself regarding the stories of the third season straying from books on which they were supposed to be based, it was decided the 4th season of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends would take a more conservative approach, choosing to stick closer to Awdry's work. The crew had been having trouble finding suitable stories to adapt into episodes dating back to the second season, when Britt Allcroft commissioned Christopher Awdry to write "Even more about Thomas the Tank Engine" for the sake of future television adaptions. The third season had simply made up it's own material to work around this, but this caused controversy.
